NREL study on HECO’s use of advanced inverters

On July 31st, HECO filed an NREL study on smart inverters; “Simulation of Hawaiian Electric Companies Feeder Operations with Advanced Inverters and Analysis of Annual Photovoltaic Energy Curtailment.” The study includes recommendations for the activation of voltage regulation grid support functions (GSF) to allow the utilities’ grid planners to interconnect more customer-sited rooftop solar PV. NREL recommends the combined activation of Volt-var (reactive power priority) with Volt-watt and the deactivation of Fixed Power Factor. With the combined activation of Voltvar and Volt-watt, the companies will be able to provide a “nonwire alternative” for customers that have secondary high-voltage issues to safely interconnect their PV systems with the least amount of energy curtailment.
